Imagine...
It’s 1910. You’ve travelled from New York to Golden, CO.
You have Tuberculosis.
Some call it Consumption,
Some say The White Plague.
You came for health & adventure.
You died a mile north of Lazear.
Your name is
Thomas Benjamin Jamison.
Tom developed his travel photos as postcards. Only 2 of them were sent back to his wife & family in New York. This collection changed hands several times, ending up in Florida. In the 2000’s, the Hotchkiss-Crawford Historical Society was contacted about their possible significance. Some of the photos are iconic, others mundane. They offer a rare glimpse into our valley from a travelers eyes.
Also, check out this episode of the podcast Time Sensitive. In their interview with Denver based photographer Trent Davis Bailey, he mentions spending time with these postcards in the HCHS archive.
Tom is buried in the upper Riverside cemetery – on the back road from Hotchkiss to Rogers Mesa. More info for the cemetery can be found here:
